Offered up for your / our possible enjoyment this week is yet another entry in Deimos' Exploitation Cinema Double Feature series. Each of these films have made an appearance on the Buffet previously, separately, but I couldn't help myself from revisiting them together as a double feature. I'm glad I did too because I'd forgotten how awesomely great Count Dracula's Great Love, aka Cemetery Girls, is. This movie has it all - flying cats (well, flying cat); fabulous vintage lingerie; horrible dubbing; levitating vampire chicks; death by scythe and hatchet; big hair; girl on girl on bloody girl sex; atmospheric music; an occasionally mute, pasty-faced, Dracula-esque Paul Naschy looking a bit like Alexi Sayle's vampire character on that one episode of the Young Ones where the Damned were the musical guest; plus boobs, blood, more boobs, more blood, etc. Really, what more could you ask for? There is more to this tale of life, death, love and lust though, so in case you missed it's previous Elvira treatment a couple years back (interested parties can read more about this version here) here's a chance to see it paired up with a film I thought would never see the light of day here again, Vampire Hookers; one of the Kommandant's all time favorite bad movies. To clarify, the husband loves any movie John Carradine made during the period of time every movie he appeared in was an abysmal failure but he particularly loves this one. Although I normally try to stick to writing about films that are easily accessible to our readers, one of the reasons I let him review his dusty long since out-of-print VHS copy a couple months ago (see here) was, I figured this film would probably never get a proper, or even improper, DVD release. (Plus I needed something to go with my review of Big Foot, another black mark on Carradine's filmography.) Of course, that was naive of me. Everything eventually gets released on DVD! Even grainy trailers with the Something Weird Video stamp in the corner can pop up on DVD when you least expect them. (Personally I never expect to see the SWV tag unless it's actually on a SWV release but, apparently, that too is naive of me.) Anywhoo, truly Vampire Hookers is not for the faint of heart. And by that I mean it is seriously one of the worst movies ever made! Ever! It does star John Carradine though, as well as BMB fave Vic Diaz. This one also has a lot of classic outfits, and it's own array of memorable hairstyles, plus the one dark haired vampire hooker is pretty hot. None of this makes the film itself any better mind you, I just thought I'd make an effort to mention the few selling points it has. On the whole, I thought this was a smart pairing and, particularly when watched along with the trailers (for Blood Mania, Wild Rebels, Angels Die Hard, Hell On Wheels, Chain Gang Women & The Velvet Vampire / Scream Of The Demon Lover; they appear at the front and middle of the program), make for a full evening of somewhat silly softcore '70s sexploitation sinema.
